Toppling the Pyramids: Physics Without Physical State Monism

چکیده
Abstract In this paper, we challenge a wide-spread assumption among philosophers that contemporary physics supports physical state monism . This is the claim causal powers of system supervene upon ‘lower-level’ laws and lower-level cosmos (as represented by our ‘best physics’). On view, it makes sense to ignore macroscopic system’s higher-level properties in determining its powers, since any are merely artifacts special interests. We argue common both microphysicalism , which carves into set microscopic constituents, priority posits single cosmic substance, but incompatible with form pluralism attributes irreducibly entities intermediate scales. consider number case studies fail support thesis monism. many systems (determined by) higher-level, neither reducible nor weakly emergent, compatible some kind affirms these robustly real. A pluralist ontology likely have implications for discussions free will agency.

Toppling Manipulation
This paper describes a robotic manipulation primitive called toppling—knocking a part over. We derive the mechanical conditions for toppling, express these as constraints on robot contact locations and motions, and describe an application of toppling to minimalist parts feeding of 3D objects on a conveyor with a 2 joint robot.
متن کاملMonism: The Priority of theWhole
Consider a circle and a pair of its semicircles. Which is prior, the whole or its parts? Are the semicircles dependent abstractions from their whole, or is the circle a derivative construction from its parts? Now in place of the circle consider the entire cosmos (the ultimate concrete whole), and in place of the pair of semicircles consider themyriad particles (the ultimate concrete parts).Whic...
متن کاملYamanouchi Toppling -extended Abstract
We study an extension of the chip-firing game. A given set of admissible moves, called Yamanouchi moves, allows the player to pass from a starting configuration α to a further configuration β. This can be encoded via an action of a certain group, the toppling group, associated with each connected graph. This action gives rise to a generalization of Hall-Littlewood symmetric polynomials and a ne...
متن کاملMonism: the One True Logic
Logical pluralism is the claim that different accounts of validity can be equally correct. Beall and Restall have recently defended this position. Validity is a matter of truth-preservation over cases, they say: the conclusion should be true in every case in which the premises are true. Each logic specifies a class of cases, but differs over which cases should be considered. I show that this ac...
متن کاملBalaš, Dualism and monism 128 ON DUALISM AND MONISM IN ANTHROPOLOGY: THE CASE OF CLIFFORD GEERTZ
Introduction Clifford Geertz is one of the most celebrated anthropologists in twentieth-century anthropology. Starting his career in the late nineteen-fifties, he represented the American branch of symbolic anthropology, also known as interpretive anthropology. Geertz’s work continues to influence present-day authors, even after anthropology shifted to different topics than those lying within t...
